Anat Baniel Method, Feldenkrais Method

The Anat Baniel Method (ABM) helps people of all ages overcome pain and limitation and achieve lifetime fitness and vitality – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Derived from the groundbreaking method developed by Dr Feldenkrais, the ABM is based on cutting-edge scientific theory and on the understanding of how our brain learns and transforms our body, our mind and our spirit. Tens of thousands of people seeking an alternative and complementary approach to medicine, fitness training, physical therapy programs and ways to help children with special needs have used the ABM with great success.

Outcomes and Possibilities
The work has brought successful outcomes for sufferers of Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, Fibromyalgia, Autism Spectrum conditions, and a host of uncategorized neurological disorders. Those with more everyday ailments have also benefited – the ABM has proven to be very effective in the relief of back, neck, shoulder, and joint pain. Musicians, athletes and others involved in any activity that involves movement have been helped to perform at higher levels.

For children the work has meant the difference between a full, vibrant life and one of frustration and limitation. For adults the ABM has been the key to rediscovering the vitality that was lost sometime after childhood when the stresses brought by injuries, the workplace and life in general took their toll.

Possibilities are endless for discovering how to live pain free with physical comfort and enhanced ease and range of motion. Along with greater freedom in movement, there often follows great improvements in the way students are able to think, feel, and emote.

How it Works
Although the ABM is based in movement it is really about working with the brain and its ability to form new neural pathways and connections to perform at levels never achieved before. It is a practical application of neuroplasticity – the brain’s ability to develop and change itself to best meet the needs of the challenges that life brings.

A student receiving the work learns the power of movement with attention and quickly becomes aware of how their body moves. The student learns to distribute their effort so that undue strain is not placed upon any particular area of the body. As the effort is shared, painful areas have less demand placed upon them. Consequently inflammation decreases, and pain goes away.  More.....

How it is Applied
The ABM is applied in two ways: one on one sessions called Functional Synthesis (FS), and in group classes known as Transformation Movement Lessons (TML).

Functional Synthesis
In an FS lesson, the teacher observes the way you (the student) move, and you state your goal for the outcome of the lesson. Usually, you will lie on a padded table while the teacher moves you in various ways to suggest new options for moving. The teacher gives the experience of comfort, pleasure and ease of movement, while you learn to reorganize your body in new and more effective ways. If the conditions call for it, the lesson may also be given in sitting, kneeling or standing. It is a very pleasant experience to be on the receiving end of an FS lesson, as you learn how to move in ways that you had forgotten, or never learned in the first place. Following a session, students often report that they feel more comfortable, energized, and alive.  Click for more on adults or children.

Transformational Movement Lessons
In TML, a group of students lie on mats on the floor and are guided through a series of gentle, comfortable steps that involve thinking, sensing, moving, and imagining. In performing the steps you become aware of your habitual neuromuscular patterns and rigidities, and have an opportunity to expand your options for moving with increased sensitivity and efficiency. You learn to eliminate unnecessary effort, attend to your whole self, and mobilize your intentions into actions.  Click for further description or for classes and workshops.

John Robson
John has found that he can live to his highest potential when he is at the service of others and it is his mission to help people live well. In 2004, to follow his passion, he began studying movement and its relationship to our well being. In doing so he has discovered the thrill that comes with making a positive difference in someone else's life.

He has found that better movement leads to the elimination of pain and a better way of living. When we are able to move smoothly and with minimal effort, not only does chronic pain go away, we are able to more fully participate in life and the things we want to do.  More about John
